Last Day

Thank you for a great summer school! We have had a great team, great staff. So many people have stepped in to help with items, often without being asked, and it has been very much appreciated.

We will have the last recess from 1-2. That will give you time to finish report cards, clean the room, and get students packed up. Please work with your grade level on helping to provide coverage for that recess.

Please pack up the Investigations math manipulative kits for your grade level and bring them to the office so I can return them to Title 1 teacher at Harrison. The math and reading summer school kits also need to be brought to the office.

I'm turning the time cards in Wednesday, first thing in the morning.

Tuesday

I did a phone call out over the weekend reminding families that Wednesday is the last day. Please also remind students today and tomorrow.

Monday

Last week!

Terry walked around outside after the sno-cones to look for any cups on the ground. There were none! The kids did a great job keeping the playground clean.

As you get your time card filled out, you can give it to Julie in the office. I need them by Wednesday morning.

If you have used something up in the workroom, please let me know. Julie has been keeping track of the copy paper, so we have that info.

Friday

As you are finishing your report cards over the next few days, please put in the corner what the home school is. You only need to do that for the one copy we are collecting in the office,  not the one going home with the student. Julie will be collecting them in the office as you are finishing them.

Thursday

We're getting ready for the Friday sno-cones. We'll start crushing ice after lunch recess is over. To avoid a mass rush of students, we'll start serving with k-2nd graders. Then Julie will ring a bell around 1:30 for students in 3rd-5th.

I have two sno-cone machines, Sawtooth's and Harrison's. That should be a big help. Please remind students to be patient. Everybody will get their sno-cone. We also want to keep the treats outside, not in the halls or classrooms. Terry will have garbage cans spread out around the playground.

Bells will be:

1:00 start recess
1:30 older grades line up for sno-cones
1:45 normal end of recess bell, so ignore that bell
2:00 recess ends

You can have kids look at the adults if they are unsure about the bells. We'll nod to go in when it is the correct bell.

Tuesday

When you print report cards, please print two copies. One copy will go home with the student, and one copy will be sent to their home school to put in their file. Bring those copies to the office and I'll get them sent on to the correct school.

If you need help with report cards please let me know.

Monday

Third week!

A huge thank you to Paula for helping while I was gone! She mentioned that the staff was great to work with, and I agree. She'll be out of town for a few days, and I'll have a thank you card in the staff lounge for you to sign.

Attendance prize tickets this week are red and pink. Julie will have those for you in the office.

Thursday

For friday, the last recess, please remind students that they come in at the second bell. The first bell is 1:45, and they come in at 2:00 with the second bell.

Wednesday

If you haven't picked up your orange tickets for the Friday popsicles, Julie has them in the office for you.

Tuesday

The lunch ladies really appreciate the help from teachers. The only concern is that if you are going to be handling food, even if it is packaged, you need gloves. Handling the paper bags and milk isn't an issue, just the food on the table. They will have gloves right there for you. We just want to be covered if an inspector comes out.

Lunch this week:

Wednesday: Baked cheese sandwich
Thursday: PB and Jelly Sandwich
Friday: Beef and Bean Burrito

Monday

Second week!

I'll have bottled water and pop, mostly diet coke, for you in the staff room fridges on Monday. Feel free to take as you need during the week.

Please make sure kids are also drinking water. It's going to be a hot week.

Terry put box fans in some rooms. The end rooms by the outside doors seem to be hotter, probably from kids going in and out for recesses. If your room is too hot, please talk with Terry. He can look at your swamp cooler to see if it needs adjusting.

Friday

Friday! We've made it through one week. We endured doors under construction, bus issues, and students coming late to classes. As I told Paula, Wednesday is the day you will start to see behavior issues. We definitely did. Don't forget we do have outboxes for those students that need a recess consequence. Just let me know and we will make sure that happens.

Here is the clip from the KMVT visit: http://www.kmvt.com/news/local/Summer-School-Underway-In-Twin-Falls--163945456.html

A big thank you to Jade! He got all the popsicles for the friday last recess.  If you haven't picked up your orange popsicle tickets in the office please do so.

A big thank you to Mary, the paras, and the teachers that have helped with the testing.

A big thank you to Michelle for planning the Friday morning recess treats. If you haven't noticed, she's on the social committee.

The colors for next week's lunch prize tickets are blue and yellow. I have those papers for you in the office to pick up as you need.

Enjoy your weekend!

Thursday

A big thank you to Mrs. Hinton! Lori is helping with the lunch and boy was it helpful on Wednesday. Lunch went much better.

Doors

The door at the end of the first grade hall should be finished today and they are hoping to start the door at the end of the second and third grade hall today. Thank you for your patience.

Wednesday

I've had some teachers ask about the popsicles on Friday. If kids were gone Monday but made it to school the rest of the week, can they have a popsicle. We're not going to die on a hill over a popsicle. Making it to school 4-5 days in the week is pretty good for summer school. It's up to you to make that call. Jade will be getting the popsicles from Fred Meyer and I asked him to get around 340, so we should have plenty.

Tuesday

A big thank you to Terry for fixing the bells. I was having to push them manually yesterday, but they are all set now.

The bus company said one of the buses will have a substitute driver. Fantastic! We had several kids decide to take a scenic tour of the city yesterday on the buses, instead of getting off at their stop. It was 4:30, 2 hours later, by the time we got the last kid reunited with their parent. The second day is usually better than the first.

During recess kids will have to use the bathroom in the second and third grade hall since the other door is being fixed. I'll have Terry put an orange cone or sign of some sort by that bathroom to help kids know where it is in the hall. It is a little farther down the hall.

Monday

First day!

Go ahead and wait until 8:45 to take attendance, and then send those to the office with your lunch count.

We have Julie set up with email in the office now.

Please remember the colored tickets for attendance prizes during Friday Lunch. Colors this week are green and brown.

There will also be popsicles during the longer recess on Friday for those that have been at school all week. Julie will be cutting orange tickets for you. You don't need to write names on those, and hopefully we can use those the following weeks as well.

Saturday

Several people are needing Saturday as a work day. I'll be at the school by 10am. Terry will stop by the school at 4pm to lock everything up.

Rocket Math

If you would like to use Rocket Math for extra practice of math facts, they are on the stage. Please don't take the last copy.

We will start at 8:30 am in the lunchroom. After we are done with the meeting you will be able to meet with your grade level. You can work on planning, as well as getting your rooms ready.

Thursday 19th/Friday 20th

I'll be at Harrison next Thursday the 19th by lunchtime. If you need something feel free to come see me.

When we meet on the 20th, please bring paper and something to write with. We'll start with a short meeting to discuss some housekeeping items, and you'll need paper to take a few notes.

Almost time to start. :)

Report Cards

I added the report card templates under documents. There is one for kindergarten, and one for grades 1st through 5th. I also added directions to help with opening the documents, as well as help creating copies for the students in your class. Let me know if you need help.

Pre Assessments and Post Assessments

I've made copies of all your pre and post tests.

For reading, all grades K-5 have the core phonics assessment. Grades 1st-5th also have a one minute fluency probe.

For math, grades 1st-5th have the math computations assessment from AIMSweb. It's short, 8 minutes, and can be completed whole class. Kindergarteners have two items from AIMSweb, quantity discrimination and missing numbers.

We'll go through the assessments at the Friday meeting.

Friday Fun/Attendance

The block scheduled has been updated to reflect the addition of Friday Fun. All students will have the opportunity to participate in an extended recess time outside on Friday. Students that have had perfect attendance and good behavior all week will have special treats, such as snow cones or popsicles.

There will also be prizes on Friday during lunch for attendance. I have balls, frisbees, and other fun summer items. Students will get tickets during the week for attendance, so five tickets/chances each week, and the drawings on Friday. They will need to be present on Friday to claim their prizes. Fun!

Curriculum

For Reading and Math we have the summer school intervention kits. They are at Harrison and you are welcome to take them. Some grade levels already have, and are starting to plan.

You can also use Open Court materials and Investigations materials. Several teachers at Harrison have been very kind to let us use their Open Court and Investigations materials. We also have one grade level Investigations math kit from Title 1 that is available for your grade level team.

Don't forget about technology.

If there is something that you need please let me know.

Duty Schedule

The duty schedule has been added to schedules. I worked around lunch and the block schedule, so hopefully it works.

Computer Labs

We will be using two computer labs.

The computer lab in the portable is mainly for ESL students. They will be using programs such as Imagine Learning and Rosetta Stone.

The computer lab inside the school will be for classrooms to use. I have added a schedule for that lab under documents. We can use programs such as Read Naturally.
Calendar

A calendar has been added. It has the summer school dates, and dates that staff come.

There are two bus routes for summer school: Gemini and Ranger. The routes are listed under schedules. We do have a stop at Boys and Girls Club.

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading

Barnes and Noble have their summer reading program again this summer. Students read 8 books, and they get one free book from a list to choose from.

You can find the journal form to record their reading under step one, from the link below. There is also a form in Spanish. If you have a Spanish speaking family you could send both languages. Parents might be more comfortable reading the Spanish version, while students might prefer filling out the English version.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

Applications

Please continue to apply for summer school jobs, and notice the summer school dates. Migrant summer school overlaps the Title 1 summer school, so you will need to pick one.

Friday, April 13, 2012

Multilingual Letterhead

A multilingual letterhead letter has been added to documents. This will be helpful with registration forms.

Thursday, April 12, 2012

ELL Students

Teachers are emailing and asking if ELL students can go to summer school. Yes! They are Title 1 students too. Please write on the registration form what programs they are using, like Imagine Learning or Rosetta Stone, and they can continue to use the same programs during summer school. We will have an ELL teacher to work with them.
